What can I do to ensure my safety?

1) Ladies, never let anyone else use your PC. Don't share PCs in an incall. Gentlemen, don't borrow the    provider's PC.
2) Use Google Voice if you have a personal cell phone. Using a hobby phone not in your name is better. Using both is the best.
3) Use proxy software to hide your IP address at all times.
4) Use Firefox or Chrome as your browser in stealth mode.
5) Use different passwords for all email accounts and social media accounts - personal and hobby.
6) Use a fake "real" name when telling someone in the hobby your real name.
7) Don't park in front of the incall or hotel. Don't let clients see you walk to your car.
8) Premptively create a cover story about a crazy stalker in your personal life that can be used to explain when someone accuses you of being a provider.
9) Use 2 anti-virus products on your PC.
10) If a keylogger is suspected, wipe the internal drive (don't try and remove the program) and install anti-keylogger software that scrambles what you type so that the data is useless to any keylogger that is present:
For IE (free version)
For IE, Firefox, Chrome

Or use a virtual keyboard when typing passwords or sensitive information:
For IE, Firefox, Chrome
For Firefox

11) Don't use your real name on the leases and utilities if possible.
12) Do not use the same pictures in both your personal and your hobby media. Set up false information on a fake Facebook and MyLife account for your real name and for your hobby handle.
13) Don't leave any personal information in your incall - i.e., mail, prescription bottles, credit card receipts, etc. I have seen the three examples I just gave lying in plain sight during a session.
14) Minimize use of the PM systems on any hobby board. Assume that the public can read them.
15) Guard wireless passwords carefully. My verizon FIOS router has the key printed on the unit. I hear it's the same for ATT U-verse subscribers as well.
16) Secure your PC. Don't leave it logged in and on for long lengths of time.

  1. I was too lax and have a client who is trying to blackmail me with my personal info. I want to be safe, but I don't understand half of what you are talking about here. How do I use proxy software? What exactly is a keylogger? How do I change my wifi password? Shit like that.
